"Come What May"

Inspiration Strikes:

This picture has rather a long story behind it. My favorite movie is Moulin Rouge as people who know me well know. When I first saw it in theatres, there was a particular shot during the Come What May scene that struck me as being very beautiful and romantic. I made a mental memo to myself at the time that I would have to use if for an art piece some time. This was when Yuki was still very much a whole onion with all her layers still hiding many things about her. So, it wasn't until much later, when MR came out on DVD and Yuki was fully developed that I remembered my memo about the pose and immediatly set to work! I didn't want to ape Baz's vision exactly, so I made a few changes here and there, but kept the pose that inspired me in the first place. This picture is from circa 1870 in Yuki's timeline, for the curious.

Artistic Commentary:

I am very pleased with how this piece turned out! I finally got Kenshin's hair to look the same as it does in cel art. Go me! Drawing wise, this was a bit difficult simply for the reason that there are two characters in the picture and they're embracing. Lots of porportion and anatomy fun! What I'm most proud of here are two out of three of the hands. Hands have always been the hardest thing for me, but this time, they really look like the delicate, intricate creations hands are. Wai! The shoji background I did completly on the computer after several failed attempts on paper. When you want perfectly straight, symmetrical lines, there's nothing like a computer!
